Svalbard in May: What to Expect

I traveled to Svalbard in May 2026. People keep asking me what it’s really like to visit that early in the season, so here’s my short answer.

The sun doesn’t set

By May, Svalbard is in the midnight sun, with daylight around the clock. It’s disorienting in the best way. You can step out on deck at midnight and the light looks like late afternoon. Bring an eye mask, and give yourself permission to stay up too late.

Winter hasn’t fully let go

Spring here still looks a lot like winter. Expect snow-covered mountains, sea ice in the fjords, and temperatures around freezing. The upside is a landscape that’s bright and white, with far fewer visitors than in midsummer.

Pack: warm base layers, a fully waterproof outer layer, a warm hat, gloves, and good sunglasses. The glare off snow and ice is intense.

Wildlife on the ice

Spring sea ice draws seals, and seals draw polar bears. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but this is real polar bear country. You may also see walrus, Svalbard reindeer and Arctic fox, along with seabirds returning to nest on the cliffs.

Expedition guides carry protection, and they set the rules on shore. That’s one of the main reasons to travel with an experienced operator.

Plans are written in pencil

On an Arctic expedition, the ice and the weather set the itinerary. A landing may be swapped for a Zodiac cruise, or the ship may change course because someone spotted a bear. If you go in expecting that, the surprises become the highlights.

Is May right for you?

May is a great fit if you want snowy scenery, the midnight sun and a quieter season. If your goal is to sail all the way around the archipelago, later summer usually has less ice. Not sure which fits you better? That’s exactly what we can talk through.
